He knocks and peers through into the darkness of her room. She’s dozing, slow breaths fueled by pain killers and sleeping pills that don’t quite manage the job properly. She stirs, mutters his name and he knows he shouldn’t, but he takes it as an invitation to enter, stumbling blindly toward her bed. She pulls herself up, resting on her elbows and blinking blearily into the dark, just picking out the silhouette of him against the black.
He can’t speak this time. There’s a long silence. Cassie swallows thickly.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
“Do you wanna talk?”
“No.”
Soon enough, she sits up properly. Her mind still feels hazy from the drugs. She reaches for him, grabbing a hold of his arm and pulls him down towards her, down onto the bed. Jonathan panics, “Cassie—I, no, I—“
She hushes him, “S’fine. Stay. Sleep.” She slurs sleepily. “Talk tomorrow, if you want.”
Reluctantly, he goes. He lies next to her, his muscles tense, heart thundering in his chest. He shouldn’t be doing this; he shouldn’t have come to her. This is wrong of him.
But the room spins and her skin feels warm and soothing next to him and he can’t bring himself to pull his hand from hers that she rests across her stomach. He stares at her through the gloom incredulously, why is she doing this? He doesn't deserve this.
A voice in the back of his head tells him to shut up and at least enjoy this small comfort. Still, he falls into an uneasy sleep.
